How does EFT work?
You already know what EFT is, but you’re wondering how and why it works? How can tapping on your head help you deal with emotions and physical issues? While I still believe the best way to understand it is to try the method yourself, I will attempt to answer these questions quickly and simply.
EFT is based on the premise that our emotional and physical well-being is closely linked to our body’s energy system. When this system is disrupted by negative experiences or trauma, blockages can form; these affect energy flow and lead to difficult emotions, illnesses, and other problems.
EFT works by resetting the body’s energy system, much like acupuncture needles do. Tapping on specific energy points while tuning into a problem—by thinking and talking about it—helps release energy blockages, allowing the body and mind to return to a state of balance.
Tapping sends a calming signal to the brain—specifically to the amygdala, the part responsible for processing emotions and memories. One of its primary functions is to keep us safe, assess potential threats, and trigger the body’s “fight or flight” response when we are in danger.
Tapping signals to the brain that there is no physical threat, so there is no need for that intense reaction when the “fight” is taking place on an emotional level. Although the stress is real, it does not require the same response as a physical threat.
Essentially, we are telling our brain that it is safe to relax. This helps switch off the “fight or flight” response and enables the nervous system to self-regulate. This sense of safety regarding the issue allows us to delve deeper into our psyche, connect with our subconscious, and uncover the hidden beliefs, emotions, and memories that are usually part of the problem at hand.
We often call this “peeling the emotional onion.” It is truly amazing how memories, insights, and breakthroughs emerge seemingly out of nowhere.
Tapping while simultaneously acknowledging the difficult, negative feelings and beliefs we have been holding onto allows us to express them safely and release them at an energetic level.
Creating a safe space to experience unpleasant feelings and emotions—without suppressing them—enables us to let go of judgment toward ourselves and those feelings. This creates a sense of separation from the problem, helping us stop identifying with it.
Recognizing our beliefs and how they sabotage us also helps prevent similar patterns and behaviors from recurring in the future.
Once we release these negative beliefs, we create space for neuroplasticity.
By using positive affirmations, we can reprogram our brains, choose new beliefs about ourselves and our experience of reality, and form new habits that help us view life from a fresh perspective.
Introducing love, compassion, and forgiveness literally dissolves the “glue” holding old synapses together, allowing them to open up and rewire themselves into new neural pathways aligned with the new beliefs we consciously choose. It is a truly remarkable process, and the best way to understand it is to experience it!
